In an effort to alleviate fears that a trip to the doctor’s office can bring – and as a community outreach effort, Middletown, N.J.’s eMedical Urgent Care held a Teddy Bear Clinic for the Pre-K program at Red Bank Borough Schools.
A child could register his or her bear as though the bear was a patient at the urgent care clinic, and then choose an aliment for the doctor to treat. Students were shown X-Rays of the bear, and paws and claws were stitched and sewn back together.
The teachers at the school found that the presenation was enlightening, and the children continue to role play as doctors, nurses, and patients. “For adults, a trip to the doctor is routine and isn’t so scary,” said Jane Sennett, medical director for eMedical Urgent Care. “For a child, it is all so new. We want to be sure that we not only help lessen their fear, but also make the experience as pleasant as possible.”
